F-type ATP synthases catalyze the formation of ATP. These membrane-bound enzymes utilize the energy stored in the electrochemical potential difference of protons (or Na+ in some enzymes) across the membranes in mitochondria, chloroplasts and bacteria. Proton flux is coupled to the endergonic ATP formation and release.
